TheTehran Times is an English-language daily newspaper published in Iran, founded in 1979 as the self-styled "voice of theIslamic Revolution". While not state-owned, it is considered state-controlled and closely tied to the hardline factions within the Iranian government.[1]
The newspaper was founded byMohammad Beheshti in 1979 following theIranian Revolution as a self-proclaimed "voice of the Islamic Revolution".[2][3]
In 2002, theTehran Times established a news agency which later came to be known as theMehr News Agency (MNA). Now, theTehran Times and the MNA are run by a single management system.
Mohammad Shojaeian took over as the new managing director of theTehran Times and the MNA in September 2019.[4] On April 12, 2020, Shojaeian appointed Ali A. Jenabzadeh as theeditor-in-chief of theTehran Times daily newspaper.[5]
In August 2023,Tehran Times published aUnited States Department of State memo informing U.S. Special Envoy for IranRob Malley of his security clearance suspension. The publication prompted calls byRepublicans in theU.S. House of Representatives andU.S. Senate for a probe into how the newspaper acquired the information.[6]
Ayatollah Mohammad Hossein Beheshti, second in line in the political hierarchy following the 1979Islamic Revolution, stated: "Tehran Times is not astate-owned newspaper, rather it must be the voice of the oppressed people in the world.”[7] Although the newspaper is not state-owned, "it aims to disseminate key tenets of the Islamic Revolution and is therefore generally supportive of the Islamic Republic of Iran's ideology".[8]
The Tehran Times, a newspaper with close ties to the Foreign Ministry, editorialized that "any sign of goodwill will be responded [to] by goodwill on the Iranian side."
