TheTazewell & Peoria Railroad (T&P) (reporting markTZPR) (November 1, 2004—present) is ashort-line railroad, running entirely inPeoria County andTazewell County, Illinois, and formed byGenesee & Wyoming Inc. to lease the assets of the century-oldPeoria and Pekin Union Railway (P&PU), which is owned byUnion Pacific,Norfolk Southern andCanadian National. It switches close to 100,000 cars per year and has about 142 miles of track.[1][2]Genesee & Wyoming owns 81 miles of TZPR and can handle freight cars with up to 286,000 pounds of cargo.[3]
The P&PU track straddles theIllinois River atPeoria, Illinois, making the T&P an important transportation link for industrial sites such as theCaterpillar plant inEast Peoria, Illinois. In addition to interconnections with the P&PU track's owners, the T&P interconnects with theBurlington Northern Santa Fe, theToledo, Peoria & Western, theIowa Interstate Railroad, theCanadian National Railway, theKeokuk Junction Railway, theNorfolk Southern Railway, theUnion Pacific Railway, and the T&P's sisterIllinois and Midland Railroad. All of these interchanges are atCreve Coeur, Illinois.[1][2][4]
