TheTask Force on Accountability for Crimes Committed in Ukraine is apro bono international group of lawyers established on 29 March 2022 to helpUkrainian prosecutors coordinate legal cases forwar crimes and other crimes related to the2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.[1][2]

Creation

In late March 2022, during the2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, theProsecutor General of UkraineIryna Venediktova announced the creation of an international legal task force that would support Ukrainian prosecutors in coordinating legal cases in multiple courts in several jurisdictions forwar crimes related to the invasion. Venediktova stated that the Ukrainian prosecutors had collected 2500 "possible war crimes cases", including theMariupol theatre airstrike, and "several hundred suspects".[2]

Composition

The task force includes individual British lawyersAmal Clooney,Helena Kennedy,[2]Richard Hermer,Tim Otty,Philippa Webb andLord Neuberger.[3][1] Lawyers from legal firms already representing Ukraine, Nikhil Gore fromCovington & Burling, Luke Vidal fromSygna Partners and Emma Lindsay fromWithers LLP, are also included in the task force.[4] Professors ofinternational humanitarian lawMarko Milanovic andAndrew Clapham are included in the team.[3][1]

The task force members and associated staff are required to workpro bono.[3]

Aims

The task force aims to make recommendations for legal actions in national jurisdictions in several countries, in guiding cooperation with theInternational Criminal Court investigation in Ukraine,[3] and in searching for assets of suspects that could be seized and used in compensation to victims or for rebuilding Ukraine.[2]
