Tariq Jamil (Punjabi,Urdu:طارق جمیل,romanizedṬāriq Jamīl;Punjabi pronunciation:[t̪aːɾɪkd͡ʒəmil]; born 1 October 1953)[1] is a PakistaniIslamic cleric, preacher and member of theTablighi Jama'at.[2][3] The recipient of thePride of Performance award, Tariq Jamil has been named inThe 500 Most Influential Muslims year since 2012. In the 2024 edition of the publication, he was ranked 34th most influential Muslim alive and topped YouGov polls in 2018 and 2020 for Pakistan’s most admired man.[4][3]

Early life and education

Tariq Jamil was born on 1 October 1953 inMian Channu,Punjab[1] and belongs to a well-offPunjabiRajput family of large landholders descending fromPrithviraj Chauhan, a 12th-century ruler.[5] His family ruledTulamba, a town close to Mian Channu, during the reign ofSher Shah Suri in the 16th century, who also distributed the lands around Tulamba.[6] His younger brother Dr. Muhammad Tahir Kamal Sahu is a well-knowncardiologist, working at thePunjab Institute of Cardiology inLahore.[7]

Jamil completed his primary education atCentral Model School, Lahore. He is an alumnus ofGovernment College University, Lahore, and received his Islamic education from Jamia Arabia,Raiwind, where he studied theQur’an,hadiths,Sufism,logic andIslamic jurisprudence.[3][8]

Jamil enrolled inKing Edward Medical College, Lahore after finishing a pre-medical education fromGovernment College Lahore, but he left the college without completing hisMBBS when he decided to pursue religious education.[9][8]

Jamil has delivered religious sermons internationally and comes from a school of thought calledDeoband.[10] He supports ethnic and sectarian harmony.[11][12]

Jamil's sermons focus on "self-purification, avoidance of violence, observance of Allah's orders and pursuing the way of ProphetMuhammad".[3]

Jamil has been named as one as ofThe 500 Most Influential Muslims in the world by theRoyal Aal al-Bayt Institute for Islamic Thought in Jordan every year since 2012.[3][13][14]

Views on COVID

In April 2020, he blamed God's wrath at dishonesty in society and theimmodesty of women for the outbreak and spread ofCOVID-19.[15][16] Besides praying for the welfare of the country and an end to vice, he said: "when a Muslim's daughter practices immodesty and the youth (boys) indulges in immorality, thenAllah’s torment is unto such a nation."[17][18]

Human rights proponents and other members of Pakistani society condemned the remarks.[19] Human Rights MinisterShireen Mazari responded by saying "misogynistic' and 'ignorant' comments blaming women and youth for the ongoing coronavirus crisis were 'absolutely unacceptable".[20]

Business affairs

Jamil launched his flagship clothing brand namedMTJ Brand.[21][22] It was launched in March 2021. Its headquarters are located inKarachi.[23] It is claimed the revenue from the business is used to fund hismadressahs, and build schools and hospitals in the country.[24][25] Jamil also launched the Maulana Tariq Jamil Foundation, which is a non-profit organization in Tulamba, Khanewal. It is a project that gathers funds for social work, health, and education to serve the people ofPakistan.[26][27]
