Tapi district is one of the 34 districts ofGujarat state in westernIndia. It has seventalukasVyara,Songadh,Nizar,Valod,Uchhal, Dolavan,Kukarmunda.Vyara town is the district headquarters. Tapi has 523 villages and two municipalities. The district was formed in 2007 out of some talukas that were separated fromSurat district.[1]

According to the2011 census, Tapi district has apopulation of 807,022,[3] roughly equal to the nation ofComoros[4] or the US state ofSouth Dakota.[5] This gives it a ranking of 484th in India (out of a total of640).[3] The district has a population density of 234 inhabitants per square kilometre (610/sq mi) .[3] Itspopulation growth rate over the decade 2001-2011 was 12.07%.[3] Tapi has asex ratio of 1004females for every 1000 males,[3] and aliteracy rate of 69.23%. 9.85% of the population lives in urban areas. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes make up 1.01% and 84.18% of the population, respectively.[3]

The District sharesPurna Wildlife Sanctuary with the Districts ofDang andNandurbar, the latter of which is inMaharashtra. The sanctuary is a part of theDangs' Forest.[9][10]
