Tanos river

TheTanos orTanus (Τάνος),[1] also called theTanaus orTanaos (Τάναος)[2] is a river of thePeloponnese,Greece. In antiquity it was the northern border of theThyreatis, or territory of the city ofThyrea, in the ancient region ofCynuria. It waters one of the most fertile plains in the Peloponnesus. The river rises in the summits ofMount Parnon, and falls into the sea, at present north ofAstros, but earlier south of the latter place. It formed the boundary between theArgeia andancient Laconia in the time ofEuripides, who accordingly represents it as the boundary between the two states in the heroic age.[2]
