Tamás Freund (born June 14, 1959 inZirc) is a Hungarian neurobiologist. He is president of theHungarian Academy of Sciences and won the 2011Brain Prize for research into on the functional organization ofneuronal circuits in thecerebral cortex.[1][2][3] He also won theSzéchenyi Prize.[4]
Freund attendedEötvös Loránd University, where he received a diploma in biology in 1983 and aDoctor of Philosophy in neuroscience in 1992.[1] He later received hisDoctor of Science from theHungarian Academy of Sciences.[3]
Freund was also president of theFederation of European Neuroscience Societies from 2004 to 2006.[2] As of 2011, he was director of theInstitute of Experimental Medicine of theHungarian Academy of Sciences,[2] as well as the Head of the Department of Neurosciences atPázmány Péter Catholic University.[3] In 2014, he became the president of the National Brain Research Program.[1] He was re-elected as the president of the Hungarian Academy of Science in 2023.[5]
