Frequently asked questions
Q1: Why does this article haveThe in the title? Most articles don't.
A1: The nameThe Holocaust iscommon usage.Article titles follow subjects, not other articles. See also previous discussions on the question, linked in the move banner below.
Q2: The Holocaust was not only about Jews; the total death toll was more like 11+ million...
A2: As it says in thelead sentence which defines the scope of the article, the Holocaust "was the genocide of European Jews during World War II". As explained elsewhere in the lead and body, "Separate Nazi persecutions killed millions of other non-Jewish civilians and prisoners of war (POWs)". As also explained in the lead and the body, "the termHolocaust is sometimes used to refer to the persecution of these other groups"; such uses of the termHolocaust constitute "significant minority views" as explained in Wikipedia'sWP:NPOV policy. In accordance with WP:NPOV policy, Wikipedia states the mainstream view in its own voice, while also explaining significant minority views."Reflections on Terminology for Holocaust Comparison". fromInternational Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. 2024. Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Antisemitism in Poland#Article sourcing expectations (9 May 2021):
The Arbitration Committee advises that administrators may impose "reliable-source consensus required" as a discretionary sanction on all articles on the topic of Polish history during World War II (1933-45), including the Holocaust in Poland. On articles where "reliable-source consensus required" is in effect, when a source that is not a high quality source (an article in a peer-reviewed scholarly journals, an academically focused book by a reputable publisher, and/or an article published by a reputable institution) is added and subsequently challenged by reversion, no editor may reinstate the source without first obtaining consensus on the talk page of the article in question or consensus about the reliability of the source in a discussion at theReliable Sources Noticeboard.

    Terminology: Khurbn

    [edit]

As well as the Hebrew wordShoah, I would strongly suggest the Yiddish/Hebrew word Khurbn (חורבן), meaning 'destruction', be included; this is the word in the Yiddish language, and five of the six million murdered were Yiddish speakers. It places the Holocaust both within the pre-existing language of pogroms and also in the context of the destruction of the two temples in Jerusalem.VelvetCommuter (talk)14:14, 31 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

1933 is when it started not 1941

Holocaust scholars and reliable sources that cover the Holocaust define it as the genocide of European Jews that took place from 1941 to 1945, so that’s how we define it.
The article covers earlier persecution and anti-Jewish policy beginning in 1933 as background to the Holocaust atThe Holocaust#Rise of Nazi GermanyMikewem (talk)19:49, 10 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]

"Seperate" distinction is a Wiki myth

    [edit]

The scholarly consensus on the Holocaust was that it also included the attempt to rid Germany of numerous other groups in addition to Jews, including many specific ethnicities. This article should be cleaned up of all undue (incessant) original research by editors suggesting otherwise.~2026-68502-0 (talk)20:10, 11 February 2026 (UTC)[reply]
