In the career statistics chapter (Club section) it's mentioned that during 2009/10 season, Gerrard made 13 appearances at the continental stage all in the champions league scoring twice. Well in fact he did made 13 appearances but 6 of them are in the champions league and 7 are in the Europa league because Liverpool finished third in their UCL group stage. And his two goals were scored in the Europa league not in the Champions league as the article seems to imply. Steven Gerrard should have the 2005 super cup included in the honours section. In the Rangers section of the Coaching Career section, it should read, "During the 2020–21 season, Gerrardled Rangers to one of their best-ever starts to the season," not "lead."

As the season in Scotland has come to an end, I believe it would make sense to update a few details in the Rangers section. "claiming back-to-back derby wins over rivals Celtic" should be updated to mention that Rangers have managed four wins over Celtic in the 2020-21 season, something they haven't done since 1996-97. Rangers have managed an invincible league season, the first time they've done it in 38 games. 102 points is their best ever points tally, beating their Premier League record of 97 points. 13 goals conceded is also the best ever defensive record in a 38 game campaign in the Scottish top flight. It is their best top flight goal difference ever, and the most goals scored in the league by Rangers since 2002-03. In light of recent conflicting edits regarding the structure of the lead section, I think it's appropriate to set out the reasoning behind my proposal for how the section should be structured. I believe it should be structured likethis, with the England and club careers merged to form a "playing career" paragraph, as opposed to the long-standing previous structure of separating them out (for example, likethis).

My reasoning for structuring it as proposed is as follows:

1. Relative importance of club/international careers: As pointed out byMessi R9 R10 CR7 Thiago LFC, Gerrard's club career, in terms of events, successes, and—perhaps most importantly—coverage in the body of the article, is significantly more notable than his England career. As such, this disparity should be reflected in the coverage of the respective portions of his career in the lead section. Why dedicate an entire paragraph to a relatively unremarkable England career, when there is much more to be said about his achievements and managerial career by comparison? Following the rule of thumb concerningreal due weight, it is most appropriate to merge the England and club paragraphs into a single "playing career" paragraph.
2. Growing significance of managerial career: Given Gerrard's blossoming managerial career, space in the lead section is increasingly going to be at a premium. Devoting an entire paragraph solely for his international career is only going to become harder to justify with respect to keeping the lead to four short, succinct, and punchy paragraphs (following guidance and objectives set out inWP:CREATELEAD). Therefore, it makes more sense to merge the England and club paragraphs when looking ahead on how the achievements paragraph will likely need to be revised (whereas the "playing career" is now over and the relevant paragraph's contents thus largely settled), and when considering the purposefulness of each lead paragraph.
3. Relative significance and quantity of individual achievements/awards: If we are to adequately summarise Gerrard's most notable successes, which it is appropriate to do in the lead section, I believe it necessary to attribute a paragraph to this instead of lumping it in with the club career paragraph. As explained in 1., we must consider a section's real due weight, and as touched on in 2., space is at a premium in the lead. Both can be better addressed by having two nicely weighted paragraphs—one covering his entire playing career and the other summarising his achievements/explaining his notability in the sport—than the alternative of having one bloated paragraph attempting to cram in his club career and achievements, followed by a much smaller paragraph concerning a far less notable England career.

I'm yet to hear any reasoned explanations for separating international and club career paragraphs, save for that it was thestatus quo, or that"It’s standard to have club level and international level in different paras"; the latter of which I vehemently disagree with. There is no established or agreed upon "standard" for the structure of the lead section (inWikipedia:WikiProject Football/Players or otherwise) specifying that the international and club careers of a player should be dedicated separate paragraphs in the lead, as claimed.

In fact, the very idea of a strict "standard" for lead sections of any article (save merely for some recommendations on what should or should not be included) goes against the very purpose of a lead section, which is to be bespoke to each article with the sole objective of summarising its contents. Naturally, the contents of each footballer (and manager) biography will vary wildly, and this should be reflected in varying lead sections. Moreover, articles such asJohan Cruyff andPep Guardiola show it demonstrably false that there is any uniform "standard" for separating out the two portions of a player's career into separate paragraphs.

As a footnote to the above, I would envisage the eventual structure of this lead section, following the conclusion (or at least major development) of Gerrard's managerial career, (provided he doesn't kill anyone or do something else notable outside of the football sphere) would be, following a similar development of the contents of the article itself: (1) the standard first paragraph (name, D.o.B., very brief high-level summary), (2) summary of playing career, (3) summary of managerial career, and (4) summary of achievements/significance/notability.
