Requests and changes

I'd question the statement that Sally Bretton "is most famous as Kim Alabaster in the Channel 4 comedy Green Wing". Surely her role as Donna in The Office will have brought her greater attention?DeLarge08:32, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have contacted the Agency (for CV) and using the web updated the information. There is still some information that is inaccurate or missing and has been highlighted. So far Wikipedia now has the most information about Sally Bretton!

Regarding the previous text "is most famous ..." I also feel that her role in the Office is probably where some people saw her from, so I have changed the line to give a small list.Zarief22:24, 25 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sally's agency has requested that their information (address, telephone number, e-mail address)not be placed publicly on the article - Please uphold this request.Zarief20:56, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sarah Emily Bretton is a DIFFERENT PERSON! Sally was born in 1976 or 1975.http://www.northamptonchron.co.uk/news/office-girl-to-theatre-stage-1-946212

Again, she was NOT born in 1980! Somebody in the past has found the birth record of one Sarah Emily Bretton and leapt to the wrong conclusion.

Page still gives the erroneous d.o.b. and I doubt the source that says her husband's name is Lee.— Precedingunsigned comment added by82.69.88.176 (talk)12:06, 16 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[1] Lee Mack confirmed her husbands name in this recent interview.

Besides all the citations on the web, and presently for the Wikipedia article, there are numerous newspaper and other articles that just state her age, which taken together agree with the age now set in the Wikipedia article. DBManley 03:06, 8 April 2017 (UTC)

@DBManley: Tv.com and your twitter sources disagree withThe Telegraph article, which says she was 39 in 2015.[1]Sro23 (talk)17:18, 8 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Sro23: What if "The Telegraph" is wrong?

Could someone please produce a definitive birthday?— Precedingunsigned comment added byDBManley (talkcontribs)23:07, 8 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Birth date

[edit]

I've worked on a large number of BLPs where editors had difficulties determining the date of birth. I'll try my best to help.

Until editors can agree on reliable sources, it's best to leave her birth date out. There are some Wikipedia articles that only list the day but not the year, so that's always an option.

There are many articles where the birth date is incomplete or missing, especially for actresses. However, they are mostly for people born where or when accurate birth records are uncommon. I'd guess 1980ish UK birth records could settle this, unless they are private. While birth records are primary sources, they can be used with secondary sources. Another approach is to look for records about a person's early life.

Note in addition to the restrictions of BLP, there is currently an open legal dispute on the matter of online publishing of birth dates (IMDb.com, Inc. v. Harris, mentioned inHoang v. Amazon.com, Inc.). If in doubt, we should leave it out.

Anyone know if UK birth records are publicly available? --Ronz (talk)00:25, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Ronz: I thought that perWP:BLPPRIMARY we weren't allowed to use public records as sources for personal info such as birth date?Sro23 (talk)00:36, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Primary sources shouldn't be used alone, and we need to be sure to avoid original research and the like. BLPPRIMARY:Where primary-source material has been discussed by a reliable secondary source, it may be acceptable to rely on it to augment the secondary source, subject to the restrictions of this policy, no original research, and the other sourcing policies. An official birth record will help us greatly, and can be used to confirm secondary sources in exactly this situation. SeeTalk:Lee Grant,Talk:Rebecca De Mornay andTalk:Lydia_Cornell for examples of using both primary and secondary sources together. --Ronz (talk)15:25, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The year was added[2] noting that the Telegraph reference indicates her age at the time. There's probably a reliable source for the day and month somewhere, but I'm not finding it with a quick search. --Ronz (talk)16:05, 9 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Any chance of a lock on this article? As I've explained a Sarah Bretton was born in 1980 but, as mentioned in the Telegraph, the actress was born Sally Davis and chose the name Bretton quite randomly.— Precedingunsigned comment added by82.69.88.176 (talk)21:51, 13 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You have to be extremely gallant to look at Sally and it not to be obvious that she is past 40.— Precedingunsigned comment added by82.69.88.176 (talk)21:53, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Born 1980 according to IMDB. They check submissions.2.28.151.208 (talk)20:16, 28 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@2.28.151.208 Was this ever finally resolved? I have started work on the Wikipedia page, for Sally, myself. While researching I have been watching her back catalog. Was she really 7 in Napoleon or 10 in Screen One?NeilHolmesUK (talk)13:38, 15 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
IMDb is not a reliable source, and I suspect that the citation used here has lifted the date from there. If doubt is cast by new information, we should leave it out. Or can add all of the relevant contradictions in sources in a footnote.Laterthanyouthink (talk)04:11, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I am thinking that, at the very least, the date should be a "qualified" add. I would guess that most places have lifted the date of birth from here. It may be true and people better than I may well have researched that. If they have then, perhaps, evidence should have been presented in this page. But my sense is that some things, in my research, seem to make sense but others do not. I suggest that I add something like a "believed to be but not confirmed", so as not to cause offence to those that made the original conclusion after their research, and then I will add some of my findings as I collate them. If I don't get "the answer" then I will add the contradictions in exactly the way that you describe. The addition of the "questions" could lead to the definitive answers. How does that sound?NeilHolmesUK (talk)05:54, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds fine, but preferably in footnotes. Have you had a read ofWP:BLP (specifically the DOB section)?WP:LEAD may also be useful guidance, if you haven't looked at that one yet. Generally, perWP:LEADFOLLOWSBODY, we try to keep clutter and references out of the lead, so everything in the lead should also appear in the body, with citations, and it is there that I would also add a footnote if necessary. I haven't looked into her birthdate much myself, but you're right about the potential for other sources lifting the date from Wikipedia (or IMDb) and then there is the potential for endless mirroring.
I like to use theEFN template to make footnotes, mainly because it's simple in its basic form (just need to remember to add a Footnotes section with the Notelist template as well) - but as I see you're a newbie, feel free to ask for help in formatting if you want to put something in a footnote.Laterthanyouthink (talk)10:05, 16 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Laterthanyouthink Thank you for your guidance. It is very much appreciated. I will study the pages that you have highlighted.NeilHolmesUK (talk)04:43, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No worries at all. Feel free to ask questions. It takes months or years to get some of these things under one's belt, or at least internalised. And I still find out new things about style on a regular basis!Laterthanyouthink (talk)05:16, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Strange, very strange

[edit]
  • A huge amount of content, recently removed, was unreferenced.
  • Much of this was rambling and unencyclopaedic.
- an example 'Surely this impressive resume would have helped towardsLee Mack selecting Sally as the replacement for Megan Dodds from season 2 ofNot Going Out.'
- another being 'A confident portrayal of this scene, by Bretton, served as an early indication of what was to come from this young actress.'
  • The contributor of this content admits to being the creator of the 'Sally Bretton Appreciation Group' on Facebook. (also, which the contributor added as an external link)
  • Most of the references are from 'Holmes, Neil' and the name of the contributor for the majority of the content is 'NeilHolmesUK'

This seems off. Surely multiple policies and guidelines are being contravened.— Precedingunsigned comment added by2003:D3:FF39:B5FC:84AD:2E75:E445:FD6 (talk)18:57, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
