Should beSalamiyah, notal-Salamiyah

[edit]

This article should be moved toSalamiyah, as it is the most common English language usage.al-Salamiyah isn't even the correct transliteration according toWP:MOSAR which prefersas-Salamiyah.Batternut (talk)11:51, 3 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

NB Originally created asSalamiyah, moved toAl-Salamiyah without discussion. Google book counts:Al-Salamiyah, Hama 58,Salamiyah, Hama 146; news counts:Al-Salamiyah, Hama 60,Salamiyah, Hama 160.

Salamiyah is not Salamias

[edit]

Salamiyah was not a center of Christianity, it was not even considered a city by George of Cyprus or Hierocles in the 6th century. Salamias was a city that had an exempt bishopric within the Antioch patriarchy. It was located in the Roman province ofSiria I, near Antioch, in a currently unlocated location. The location of the current city of Salamiyah corresponds to the ancient Roman province ofPhoenicia Libanesia. See the works of Le Quien, Vailhé, Honigmann and Devreesse.
