First Hispanic Manager to win World Series?

[edit]

I don't believe this is technically correct.Lou Piniella won the 1990 World Series as manager of the Reds. Ozzie, I believe, is the first manager to be born in Latin America to win the World Series.— Precedingunsigned comment added by63.86.148.34 (talk)17:27, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"Although he is considered"

[edit]

Removed text "Although he is considered one of the best managers in the league and instrumental in his team's2005 World Series win" from "controversy" section. No source as to who considers him such was listed, and in fact most baseball experts have a very negative opinion of Guillen's managerial skills and credit the 2005 championship to an unusually strong performance by the White Sox starting pitching staff.

Headline text

[edit]

Can anyone confirm that Guillén was the one who came up with the 2005 slogan "Win or Die Trying"? I'm inclined to believe it was most likely the ChiSox marketing division. Until someone can find a source, I believe the line should stay out.66.185.85.7019:35, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Brooks Boyer and the White Sox marketing department came up with the "Win or Die Trying" to go along with the Grinder Rules.

Recommend a running list of Ozzie Guillen quotes. In 2005, Ozzie entertains in the same manner that Ditka and McMahon entertained (combined). While using some unkown language.

I think the Facts and Trivia sections should be combined.

EDITORS REMOVE THIS LINE - When he does offend, he simply shrugs it off, using lame excuses such as "it is ok to say dese dings in da third world country i be from" This line is POV, borderline racist and juvenile. Not in any way fitting for an encyclopedia entry. Whomever was logged in to write this should be bounced for being too honest.

It has already been reverted... I don't know who keeps writing that crap.Dubc072418:12, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think someone should remove "hideous" from the Trivia section when dealign with his wife. ("...his eldest son and hideous wife")

Speaking of Third World, why are the links for American and Venezuelan Santeria-ists included at the bottom of Ozzie's entry? There's no mention of it in the entry itself. Good heavens, he's not into that animal-mutilation nonsense, is he?38.115.185.13 (talk)21:09, 11 August 2011 (UTC)GoGo[reply]

F Bombs?

[edit]

Seriously, can we use a little more professional writing style here?

Professional writing on this absolute joke of a website? Dream on.

Good point!Dubc072417:41, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Shit vs. Chit

[edit]

When Guillen, so eloquently, ripped Ordonez, he clearly said "piece of CHIT", not shit. Listen to the sound byte. No "sh" sound was used, it was clearly "ch". Let's not cover up the fact that this class act can't speak the language.

Listen to the sound byte!!

No. Please stop vandalizing the page.Steve p23:44, 24 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Language

[edit]

Can we edit this so it's not so vulgar? I can only imagine a kid reading this page. Just because he said it doesn't mean we have to quote it directly. Some blanks or "expletives deleted" would suffice.Dubc072414:04, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alex Rodriguez

[edit]

Didn't ozzie say something about him when he refused to particpiate in the World Baseball Classic?

Uh, yeah ;-) "Alex was kissing Latino people's asses, he knew he wasn't going to play for the Dominicans; he's not a Dominican!" He also made this comment about Nomar Garciaparra: "It's the same with Garciaparra playing for Mexico. Garciaparra only knows Cancun because he went to visit." Both A-Rod and Nomar are native-born US citizens, that's apparently what prompted Ozzie's comments.Tubezone03:25, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Weak hitting shortstops?

[edit]

I understand listing people like Ozzie andDavid Concepcion as weak hitting shortstops butOmar Vizquel? Come on now, he may not hit 30 homeruns a year but he has hit as many as 14 in a year along with having a lifetime .275 average, and batting as high as .333. Along with that he nearly always walks more than he strikes out, leading to a strong OBP and has stolen over 350 career bases. I don't see anyone calling Tony Gwynn or Brett Butler weak hitting. Also, perhaps "weak hitting shortstops" should be changed to (excluding Vizquel who is a good hitter) "good glove/no hit shortstops" because that is the reason those guys were in the league.

Quotes about Magglio Ordóñez, and a general reminder

[edit]

Please fix the italics in this portion. It should be consistent with the way the rest of the section is formatted: Quotes in italics, non-quote text not italicized. Also, there should be end quote marks after the comma after the word 'shit' to close that portion of the quote.

“Magglio is full of shit,Guillén said. Apologize to who? I don't have to apologize to anybody because, first of all, he's the first one to name me. He said I was pushing him to play [last season], and I was responsible. Don't make me feel like I was the bad guy in this.

Please also remember for writing and editing in general: At the end of a quote, a comma or a period should always goinside the quote, not outside the quote, even if it doesn't look right. This is standard editing style. (This doesn't apply to question marks unless the quote is actually a question. Also, a semicolon after a quote should always gooutside the end quote marks.

Carlos Lee Section

[edit]

This doesn't really seem like a controversy to me. It just seems like one of Guillen's many insults. Maybe if Carlos made some public comments back at Guillen it would have been but I don't really remember the situation too well. Should this section be taken out?—Precedingunsigned comment added by69.219.169.130 (talk)00:34, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Controversy section

[edit]

I put it under the manager as a sub-section because it has to do about his time as White Sox Manager.Kingjeff (talk)02:03, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"When asked about the recent controversy surrounding the weight of then-Florida Marlins third baseman Miguel Cabrera."When exactly did this occur? This is an encyclopedia article, not a newspaper article, so it should not say "recent", but should have a date.Tad Lincoln (talk)01:17, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Radio interview

[edit]

I'm not sure who this guy is, but I think this radio interview should be included somehow:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuUMw7fdPOI—Precedingunsigned comment added by24.181.41.239 (talk)13:42, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Still in White Sox dugout

[edit]

Why does it say Marlins? --FourteenClowns (talk)02:44, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That would be unsourced vandalism. It's not official. – Muboshgu (talk)02:48, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is this a reliable source?ESPN article on the moveTh 2005 (talk)—Precedingundated comment added02:50, 27 September 2011 (UTC).[reply]

Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was traded to the Marlins for two minor league players, according to a source close to the situation.
I would ask who this "source" is. He/she could be right, but he/she could be wrong and the reporter could be reporting this irresponsibly. Wait for confirmation from the teams or league. – Muboshgu (talk)02:53, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A source confirmed to MLB.com that Guillen told his players prior to Monday's series opener against the Blue Jays that the game would be his last in Chicago.

MLB.com is reporting on it.Th 2005 (talk)02:58, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

And who is the "source"? That's not an official announcement, they're just reporting on the developing story as well. – Muboshgu (talk)03:04, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I really don't think he should be shown in Marlins colors yet. They'll make an official announcement soon, so why not wait until then?Delaywavestalk20:21, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
He shouldn't be shown as a Marlin. McKeon is the manager of the Marlins for their remaining games. Nothing is official regarding Guillen succeeding him. – Muboshgu (talk)20:22, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Personal Life

[edit]

What, exactly, is the point of pointing out that he tweeted that he likes Bed, Bath & Beyond and that Comcast sucks? Doesn't really seem necessary.Th 2005 (talk)02:54, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I meant to get to that next. When the news about Florida starting breaking, I came to watch over this page and saw numerous things I've edited out. That I left at first because it was sourced, the part about Sean Penn I took out. I think that should go. It's not our job to advertise for corporations without any reason. – Muboshgu (talk)02:56, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Removed unreferenced statement

[edit]

I just deleted the following which appeared as part of the sentence stating Guillen did not go to White House after 2005 World Series win: "dramatically contrasting that refusal with a visit to PresidentHugo Chávez with a Venezuelan flag as part of the World Series victory celebration.[citation needed]"

If this is sourced it can be added back, however, without a reference it's an unsubstantiated and inflammatory claim.--Utahredrock (talk)18:07, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
