older entries

[edit]

At this point, I think the content of this article's a little one-sided (as far as the list of shows is concerned). At least it's a famous studio—fromCanada no less—so why not let it have some history tidbits like what's onWDFA,H-B,Fleischer Studios andFilmation?

Last year, I created the pages on Nelvana's founders:Hirsh,Loubert andSmith. I feel this is theonly history Wikipedia has on this studio...

So maybe I'll continue from this point soon. --Slgrandson02:10, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Templates?

[edit]

Maybe because Nelvana's empire has a lot of films and shows under its belt, along with it being a famous animation studio, I feel there should be at least three templates covering the studio and its history:

  • {{Nelvana}} for use on the main article and pages on its notable figures;
  • {{Nelvana films}} for films which Nelvana made or distributed, or whose production they were involved in;
  • {{Nelvana TV shows}} obviously for use on articles concerning series made, in whole or in part, by the company.

I might as well give these three a try next week. --Slgrandson01:46, 18 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And yes, I've thought of the possibility of another one:{{Nelvana specials}}. --Slgrandson03:43, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Suggested link

[edit]

As I'm improving this page (perAndyZ'scomments atWP:PR/A), I wonder how useful this link will become:

The last part of this article contains useful info about Michael Hirsh that could come in handy, as the pages on him and his company approach their next edits.

Word choices

[edit]

In the second on the 1990's, a sentence reads:Purists of the original Japanese version criticised the resulting English dub, which was broadcast on Kids WB! in the U.S. market and Teletoon in Canada.

I would say this is a poor word choice, because it's implying a bias. It seems to be saying "While the changes were minimal, some whiney people complained about it." Is it even a neccesary comment for this article? Yes, there was a lot of internet furor, but as a history of the company, it's a very minor note.Meiran01:11, 28 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In reference to the above mentioned section:
I suppose, since the sentence was deleted and this edit was made 7 years ago, that this will be a moot point. However, "is it a necessary comment for this article" ? Absolutely, although it did not go far enough. It was not a 'minor' note in the history of the company. Cardcaptors was not only criticized by "purists", it was roundly called to task by industry professionals and anime historians alike for its blatant censorship, editorial cultural imperialism, major changes and deletions of important characters and situations, clumsy translation and poor choices in voice directing.

Taking all that into account, in addition to the fact that it was the first anime property Nelvana ever licensed would raise the subject somewhat above a 'minor note'. The comment should have been EXPANDED upon rather than deleted altogether. Doing so makes it seem as if you are trying to whitewash history. With a company having the pedigree Nelvana has, I would think that this major fumbling of a property would be notable. Instead it is brushed aside, making it seem like this article is nothing more than a marketing arm for Nelvana rather than a dispassionate history of the company.StealthMomo (talk)16:06, 15 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

GA Pass

[edit]

It meets the standard. Well written in most areas, although in some, the prose is less than brilliant - for example, the lead sentence doesn't flow too well. A lot more citations are needed (page references for most sentences will be needed, and it'll be much easier for others to verify), and try to find another book to source from. Well done on providing fair use rationale for every image.CloudNine16:33, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hah, I was reviewing this while you were typing your review. Anyway, I'll say what I was going to say anyways: There are an immense amount of redlinks in this article. Please, please, please either de-link them or create the articles in question. The middle part of the article has more red links than blue. --PresN16:36, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Heh ;) Looking over it, I agree on that point.CloudNine16:39, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Distribution rights

[edit]

In the fourth paragraph of the article, where it mentions what shows Nelvana has distributed, the vast majority of information appears to be untrue. From what I know, the only correct info there is that Nelvana has distributedThe Fairly OddParents internationally, andMy Friend Rabbit is produced by Nelvana itself anyway.Fifthship (talk)07:03, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

GA Reassessment

I will be doing the GA Reassessment on this article as part of the GA Sweeps project.H1nkles (talk)18:20, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have some concerns with this article as follows:

  • In the history section the 1970's and the first half of the 1980's sub sections are very sparsely referenced. The block quote isn't referenced and I see three in-line citations for roughly 10 paragraphs of information. That is not enough.
  • The Franchises section has one in-line citation, there is a lot of information here that should be cited better.
  • The Logos section istotally unreferenced.
  • Refs 2, 10, and 29 are dead links that will need to be repaired. External link from theCanadian Jewish News is also a dead link that will need to be removed or fixed.
  • All of the images are copyrighted. PerWP:NFC it is necessary to use Free images, images that are copyrighted are not considered free use. I recognize that there are Fair Use rationales on all the images but that does not mean we are off the hook. We must strive to use free images wherever possible andonly use non-free images if nothing else is available and thensparingly. The article is liberally sprinkled with copyrighted images. TheGA Criteria wants images so it is appropriate to have images but editors should use copyrighted images only when necessary. Personally I don't think this many images are necessary. Certainly the logo at the beginning and one, perhaps two other images are sufficient for GA. The rest should be removed regardless of Fair Use rationale. I welcome discussion and dissenting opinions on this matter.
  • There are several red links that should either be delinked or articles should be made for them.

These concerns are sufficient for me to hold the article for work to be done. If no work is undertaken in the next week the article will be delisted from GA status.H1nkles (talk)18:54, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My concerns have not been addressed and as such I will delist the article from GA because it does not meet the GA Criteria in regards to Images and references.H1nkles (talk)16:12, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Logos

[edit]

Is an entire section devoted to the minor differences in the logos notable? I'd be in favour of removing the section altogether.—Precedingunsigned comment added by66.207.206.210 (talk)19:15, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

JumpStart Superheroes removal

[edit]

I would like to remind you all that I have removed the JumpStart Superheroes reference, so please do not mark it as vandalism. It was part of a hoax that was going on in Wikipedia as per an old deletion discussion and for some odd reason that did not get removed from the Nelvana article. I can confirm that this is a hoax especially since Knowledge Adventure is very restrictive regarding the use of their intellectual property and thus would not be possible.68.117.8.110 (talk)21:38, 12 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Employees

[edit]

If it wasn't already obvious from the studio's diminished output, Nelvana and its sister companyToonBoom have nowhere near 600-700 employees. According to arecent Corus press release, the two combined "employ more than 300 Canadians."Damnedfan1234 (talk)09:33, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation

[edit]

Is it/nɛlˈvænə/ or/nɛlˈvɑːnə/? Is the A in the second syllable pronounced as in "fat" or as in "father"? Perhaps somebody who knows can insert one of these.Kelisi (talk)04:39, 12 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I wonder if you could do something.

[edit]

I do suspect that the Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers movie on Disney+ threw in some references to Nelvana since the movie makes so many references to animation works. You'd think since they included Ugly Sonic and some Kingdom Hearts references, they'd also include references to Nelvana as well. But so far, I haven't seen any person mentioning this. So, I wonder if someone can go hunting for Nelvana references in the Chip n' Dale Rescue Rangers movie?SpyderSoup (talk)12:09, 18 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Name

[edit]

This page gives the company's full legal name as "Nelvana Enterprises, Inc.", but I can't find any reliable sources supporting this. All I can find is references to its supposedly-former name, "Nelvana Limited". It's even called Nelvana Limited at the bottom of their website. So is "Nelvana Enterprises, Inc." the correct name, or is it "Nelvana Limited"?Mr. Starfleet Command (talkcontributions)20:28, 14 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Since both thePrivacy Policy and theTerms of Use on Nelvana's website refer to "Nelvana Limited", it is pretty clear that a company by this name still exists. Upon doing some more digging, I foundthis article, which seems to indicate that Nelvana Enterprises is a separate company that deals with international marketing. We can further see the distinction between these companies in that Mellany Welsh is the Head of Nelvana Enterprises while Pam Westman is President of Nelvana Limited.
Since this article is about the animation studio founded over fifty years ago that produced so many children's animated shows known around the world, not the seventeen-year-old, little-known international distribution spin-off company, I have reworded the article's opening paragraph to correctly refer to the company as "Nelvana Limited". If anyone disagrees with this edit, please explain your reasoning below. Sincerely,Mr. Starfleet Command (talkcontributions)04:24, 24 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
