'Tower of Homage'

[edit]

This term is essentially a literal translation from Castilian Spanish and somewhat misleading. Rather than being an colourful, mediaeval remnant, unique to Gibraltar, torre de homenaje is the standard Spanish term for what would be described in English as the castle 'keep,' ordonjon as it might have been described in mediaeval Anglo-French.

While 'Tower of Homage' may be Gibraltarian usage, reflecting the particular cultural and linguistic mix of that community, as well as being an attractive label for tourist purposes, perhaps the name should briefly be set in context.JF42 (talk)14:01, 18 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Moorish CastleMoorish Castle (Gibraltar)Moorish Castle (Gibraltar) – PerWP:PRECISE andWP:PRIMARYTOPIC. The current title is too generic.Moorish Castle should be a DAB page. There are many other Moorish castles mentioned inMoorish_architecture#Fortifications. Even if not all of them are known by that name, the same name is used by other castles, most notably theCastle of the Moors in Sintra, which is at least as significant as the Gibraltar castle. For sources that refer to the castle in Sintra as "Moorish Castle" seegoogle books search.Vpab15 (talk)17:00, 23 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose perWP:PRECISE. "Moorish Castle" is a proper name and there is no other article on WP that would reasonably use the title with thepossible exception of Castle of the Moors, which is already mentioned in the hatnote. If we want a dab page for generic common-noun Moorish castles, we should just create it atMoorish castle. -Station1 (talk)00:20, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • Confusion with the castle in Sintra is not just a possibility, it is a certainty. The castle in Sintra is also known by that name as shown in nomination link.Vpab15 (talk)10:53, 28 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
      • That is why we have the hatnote in place. Anyone confusing this castle with the Sintra castle just clicks on the hatnote. A dab page provides no additional benefit to those readers, but it would inconvenience readers wanting this article.Station1 (talk)00:00, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
        • The Sintra castle is a class B article, whereas the Gibraltar castle is class C. The views are more or less similar (see[2]). Per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, there is no primary topic. The official English webpage of the Sintra Castle uses "Moorish Castle" (see[3]). That is just one of many English sources that refer to the Sintra castle as "Moorish Castle", asshown in google books.Vpab15 (talk)10:16, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per Station1. Unless there is another article with the same name I don't see a good reason to move it.REDMAN 2019 (talk)12:03, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose per both of the above. Any potential confusion with the Castle of the Moors is already addressed quite adequately.KJP1 (talk)10:45, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Closing comment: I see thatMoorish castle is currently a redlink. If there were more than two often called this, then a DAB at that name might be a possibility. With only two, hatnotes are fine IMO. But this isn't a supervote, just an idea. There's clearly no prospect of consensus to move as proposed.Andrewa (talk)18:08, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
