Nominator:Taitesena (talk ·contribs)07:56, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer:EllaMinnowPea371 (talk·contribs)20:04, 2 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,@Taitesena, I will be your reviewer for this article! As I'm a new Wikipedian and this is my first GA review, I will also be receiving assistance and guidance from my mentor,@It is a wonderful worldthank you .^., so I appreciate your patience as I learn the ropes. My plan for this review is to read over the article for the first time and then give a brief assessment, and after that I will give in-depth comments. I will be a little busy this week, but I don't plan on taking more than a day to respond to any pings. Thank you!EllaMinnowPea371 (talk)20:04, 2 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Immediately I have to say that there is a {{more citations needed}} banner on theCuisine section that is still valid. If you do not fix this issue immediately, I may have to quick fail the article perWP:QF.EllaMinnowPea371 (talk)21:21, 2 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I have fixed the area with multiple sources cited, as far as I know there are no more citation tags remaining. I appreciate you taking the time to help review the article and no worries about timing.Taitesena (talk)00:57, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for responding so quickly! One other thing before I start the initial review: the article has several punctuation and grammar irregularities. I would suggest also taking the time to copyedit for clarity before I start bombarding you with sentence-by-sentence corrections.EllaMinnowPea371 (talk)01:58, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Adding to say the article is also missing some {{lang}} tags as well as a stated English variety. I am doubly appreciative of your responsiveness with regards to these issuesEllaMinnowPea371 (talk)02:14, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hey @EllaMinnowPea371 I'm looking forward to working with you on this! Though, this might be a quick one because this article is not in the best shape at least citation-wise. Criterion 2b says "All content that could reasonably be challenged, except for plot summaries and that which summarizes cited content elsewhere in the article, must be cited no later than the end of the paragraph (or line if the content is not in prose)". In practice, this means pretty much everything needs to be cited. In this article there is a lot of uncited sections, such as:
  • In Mizo historiography, Thangur is the son of Zahmuaka, the first Lusei chief.
  • Hakha, or Halkha in the Mizo language, is the capital city of Chin State which is the main settlement of Pawis in Myanmar, where they are known as the Hakha Chin people
  • The entire section on traditional clothing
In my experience, when there is uncited sections and statements like this, it almost always means there is less obvious source text integrity issues throughout the whole article, and the article normally needs a full source-text integrity check to verify that every statement is fully supported by the citation immediately after it. This could be confirmed with a source spot check like inthis review.
As the reviewer, you get to make the call as to what to do. I personally would quickfail it as it is a long way from meeting criterion 2b, and then when the nominator has fixed these issues outside of the GA system they can renominate. Improvements can be discussed on the article talk page rather than in the GA review. Alternatively you could continue reviewing, but the review would likely drag on for a month or more, which isn't the best for reducing the review backlog.IAWW (talk)15:10, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for this great advice. @Taitesena, I have found these unsourced statements in addition to whatIt is a wonderful world pointed out.
Lead
  • Regionally the language is classed within the Zohnahtlak languages among the Zo people.
Definition and subgroups
  • The Hakha Chin people do not identify themself as Mizo and prefer the name Lai or Chin.
History
  • Early Lushai Chiefs Family Tree
Culture and society
  • Other dances include Chheih Lam, Khual Lam, Chai Lam, Tlang Lam, Par Lam, and Sarlamkai. Note that Lam in Mizo means "dance."
  • After the ceremony, the bride moves into the groom's house, marking her permanent entry into his family. While traditional customs are still practiced, many Mizo couples now incorporate Western elements into their weddings, such as wearing Western-style wedding gowns.
  • They have 12 months in a year. They are: Pawlkut Thla, Ramtuk Thla, Vau Thla, Ṭomir Thla, Nikir Thla, Vawkhniahzawn Thla, Thiṭin Thla/Thlazing/Thlado, Mimkut Thla, Khuangchawi Thla, Sahmulphah Thla and Pawltlak Thla.
Political, linguistic, and economic situation
  • Entire first paragraph
  • ...resulting in attacks on the military installations in Aizawl, Lunglei and other towns. The Mizo National Front, formerly known as Mizo National Famine Front, declared independence from India.
  • ...signed a peace accord in 1986 with the Government of India, stating Mizoram was an integral part of India. Pu Laldenga came to the ministry in the interim government, which was formed in coalition with Congress in 1987. The statehood of Mizoram was proclaimed on 20 February 1987.
If you can source these statements and the onesIt is a wonderful world pointed out within the nexttwo days, I will consider continuing the review. However, in the meantime, I will also proceed with a source spot-check. If the spot-check fails or you cannot source all these statements in two days, I will fail the article, perIt is a wonderful world's suggestion.
In the event that the article does not pass, I implore you to take the time you need to clean it up and re-nominate it once it's ready, as your effort certainly deserves recognition. Best of luck.EllaMinnowPea371 (talk)18:44, 3 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have added all citations to all statements now. I will do a sentence by sentence copyedit soon. However, the main issues have been dealt with I suppose (?). If anything else needs to be done, please don't hesitate to inform me.Taitesena (talk)12:21, 5 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Taitesena, thank you for doing this, your work improving the article has not gone unnoticed. Unfortunately, the spot check failed, and I thinkIt is a wonderful world was correct in saying that there are deeper source text integrity issues that neither of us have caught yet. I will attach my comments on the spot check and the rest of the article below, and after that I will fail the article. I want to say that I am very impressed by the work you've already done improving this article, it just needs a bit more work to meet theGA criteria. I encourage you to re-nominate it once it's ready. If you have any more questions for me or my mentor, please let us know.EllaMinnowPea371 (talk)20:41, 5 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I understand, I inherited work on this page and didn't take responsibility to verify statements made before I began working on it. I will improve it accordingly and renominate it according to the spot check analysis provided. Thank you a lot!Taitesena (talk)00:03, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Just a question, I can't seem to locate [29]? There is no mention of Mekong valley in the article, I remember it being so, but I'm pretty sure I had removed such statements based on my research disqualifying it.Taitesena (talk)00:24, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'd raise the same question for [43]Taitesena (talk)00:28, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
For [29], I worked off thisarchive link which says, on the top of page 2, "This is a fact that the Mizos came from the east and their original home was in Mekong Valley."
For [43], I usedthis link to a ResearchGate PDF download, which states in a footnote on page 653, "This is derived fromzomi, a term for highlander in a number of Chin-Mizo-Kuki languages spoken in Burma, India, and Bangladesh. Linguists classify these languages as belonging to the very large family of Tibeto-Burman languages spoken all over Zomia" but as far as I can tell, does not say anything specific about "mi" meaning "person" (nor any cognate to Chinese). I hope this helps.EllaMinnowPea371 (talk)02:01, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Taitesena if you have no further questions, I am going to close the review.EllaMinnowPea371 (talk)06:48, 8 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid fixing up and adding citations have affected the order of the footnotes. If it isn't a hassle, would you kindly outline the places these footnotes of the spotcheck looked at so I may verify them at my own pace for the next nomination?Taitesena (talk)01:33, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think looking at where they were in thereviewed version should solve your problem.EllaMinnowPea371 (talk)01:43, 9 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you will forgive me for jumping in here to point out that reference #144 also needs to be fixed – bibliographic information for Samuelson (1990) is not present anywhere in the article. It could be a typo for Samuelson (1991) [ref #139] but that should be verified in the source text. Thanks,Wham2001 (talk)07:46, 6 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Spot Check
[18]checkY
[29]☒N Close paraphrasing for first sentence, and then source says "This is a fact that the Mizos came from the east and their original home was in Mekong Valley." (p. 2) but article says "Some agree that [their ancestral home] is in southern China, situated near on the banks of Yalong River."
[37]checkY
[43]Blue question mark? Confirms third sentence, but not the first nor second, and there is no citation for those
[46]Blue question mark? Unclear- text needs editing to conform to what the source says
[47]checkY
[60] [61]checkY
[72]checkY
[84]Blue question mark? Unclear- text needs editing to conform to what the source says
[96]checkY Though article text is misleading; source says Sailo is just one of the Lusei clans.
[107] [108]☒N Plagiarism and close paraphrasing of [108]
[136]☒N Cannot verify.
