Added the fact that no Red Sox player has worn #14 in the MLB since Rice retired.

This sentance "Many feel if Rice was able to join his teammates and play in that World Series the outcome would have been different, and perhaps ending the Red Sox's then 57-year Championship drought" isn't permited under the Wilkipedia rules, attributing things to "many fans" or "many people" as a way of forcing in opinions isn't kosher.

Is this worthy of inclusion in the article? It looks like someone just picked stats to make up accomplishments. 39 isn't even a notable number. I'm not sold on all of James' ideas, but I do agree that people like to invent milestones and achievements...Wencer 02:50, 30 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You make a good point. I'd prefer if that were sourced, like if it was specifically mentioned by the Hall of Fame website or something, but even without a source, I find it very interesting. To me, if anyone can be said to be theonly one to ever doanything in major league history, I find it interesting and don't think it serves any purpose to remove it. Recently (August 2009) Rice has come under fire for comments made about current major league players (Manny Ramirez, A-Rod, and Derek Jeter) specifically Jeter. “You see a Manny Ramirez, you see an A-Rod, you see [Derek] Jeter … Guys that I played against and with, these guys you’re talking about cannot compare,” “We didn’t have the baggy uniforms. We didn’t have the dreadlocks. It was a clean game, and now they’re setting a bad example for the young guys.” Rice claims that he had was misquoted

It's now sourced, however I believe this is something that should be removed perWP:UNDUE &WP:NOTNEWS. He said something that caused a minor stir among fans of a rival team. As a commentator that happens. However it's nothing career altering, nothing where discipline is even suggested. I don't see it as having any lasting impact worthy of an encyclopedia article. Stretching it to "sullied his image" seems unsupported by the source. This is a minor media dust-up that no one will remember in two weeks. As to my character, please check out my edit history. Just today I've removed vandalism here[1], and here[2] and previously opposed inclusion of negative info here[3]. I can admit to being a Sox fan, but also wouldn't let something Jeter, for example, said be blown up into something more than it is here on Wikipedia. It isn't notable and won't be in the future even among Yankees fans. It's not exactly aYogiism yet.Sswonk (talk)14:49, 25 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see the relevance of Rice's comments. Dozens if not hundreds of former ballplayers have made public comments to the effect of "Back in my day, ballplayers were better", which is really all Rice's comments amount to. Unless every article on every ballplayer who has made similar comments is also amended, I see no reason why Rice's comments should be included here.Jakzhumans (talk)12:19, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That is a curious statement since it was reported AS NEWS on Yahoo Sports but YOU deem it as not newsworthy. Yet when a Dennis Boyd or Joba Chamberlain is arrested that is considered worthy enough news to leave on their bio? By the way, how do you make a determination on which is good news and bad, and to which is right or wrong? I always thought news was news as long as it came from a credible source.NYYankees15 (talk)15:47, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The determination is simple...have similar comments been made by players of similar stature and not been considered newsworthy enough or memorable enough to mention in the articles about them? The answer is, without question, yes. Countless former ballplayers in any number of sports have lamented "today's players" with some version of the standard "ballplayers were real ballplayers back in my day" complaint, and no one thought it was worth mentioning. Rice's comments are no different, and shouldn't be treated differently.Jakzhumans (talk)16:27, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Furthermore, the difference between this kind of comment and player arrests is that the established standard in articles is to mention arrests. Mentioning a new arrest is therefore not changing an existing standard. If Rice had been arrested, editing his article to make mention of it would be perfectly warranted, because it would be following and established standard. What you're wanting to do in regard to Rice's comments is change a standard, and you haven't adequately explained why this situation requires such a change. How is this situation different from the numerous prior incidents when older players have lamented the style, dress, behavior or ability of current players?Jakzhumans (talk)16:39, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rice's Hall of Fame Standards:

Why does the wikipedia article on Rice have a detailed section on Rice's hall of fame credentials including comments about how he may not meet standards of sabermetrics? I don't think this is fair as there are numerous other players that fare worse under sabermetrics that are not subjected to these comments (e.g., Andrew Dawson who had a career .323 OBP, Tony Perez who had a much worse OBP and Slugging average than Rice, etc.).—Precedingunsigned comment added byCurtbartlett (talk •contribs)09:33, 9 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
