That "half of all vascular events occur in patients with normal or low levels of LDL cholesterol", if true, is not altogether surprising. If, let us say, 70% of the population has a normal or low LDL level and these contribute to 50% of all vascular events, then the remaining 30% of patients (that is, those with elevated LDL levels) would be contributing 50% of the vascular events - a disproportionate number. The apparently large contribution of vascular events by those with normal LDL levels would be occurring, at least in great part, by the relative large number of people in this group. In this example with assumed figures, LDL elevation results in a doubling of risk. That is what elevated LDL cholesterol is about. However, because of the large number of people in the "normal" group, it is reasonable to try to determine whether treating them by further lowing their LDL cholesterol (or by another intervention) could lower their risk for vascular events,58.173.8.24 (talk)13:43, 13 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
