Boxing owes much of its history to fist fighting techniques in Celtic lands, especially Ireland. Many of the early professional boxers were from Ireland in both England and the U.S.A. Pugilism is the original form of boxing and was widely practiced in Ireland throughout the years. There were no gloves or additional padding used in these bouts, today it is better known as Bare Knuckle Boxing or BKB. In Ireland the "Traveling Community" still take part in this art and take great pride in there Boxing history. I think this article needs to be either deleted or completely rewritten from scratch. The introduction mentions that there are many martial arts native to Ireland and gives four examples; boxing, wrestling, kicking, and stickfighting. The problem is two of these four are not Irish martial arts. Boxing, though popular in Ireland and with the Irish diaspora, is English, and kicking is not a martial art in and of itself. So that leaves us with wrestling and stickfighting. Now I don't see see anything wrong with the stickfighting section, but the wrestling section has some very outdated and incorrect information. So seeing as this article has these problems and there is already good standalone articles for Irish wrestling and stickfighting, I'm wondering is this article really necessary.Gallowglass1504 (talk)17:41, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
About 90% of this entry is taken, word for word, from my book “Shillelagh: The Irish Fighting Stick”, and that’s fine. What’s not right is deliberately leaving my books out as source material when the whole entry would not even be here were it not for my books.Shillelaghman123 (talk)21:00, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It’s odd then that while you will block my book as a source, you’re perfectly willing to use its contents for your information on Wiki. And yes it is a very serious charge. Sadly, this is precisely why teachers don’t allow Wiki as a source - it’s not very accurate honest in its articles.Shillelaghman123 (talk)23:55, 1 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This article confuses the Irish word for kicking with an entire martial art style. It also claims Coraíocht (the Irish word for wrestling that also refers to any wrestling in general) has a specific meaning and is it's own martial art. The Irish word for boxing in general was also used for traditional Irish boxing so I replaced it with a word for bare-knuckle boxing specifically but the word like how "anime" refers to all animation in general in Japan, refers to all bare knuckle boxing on general in Irish. If there was a better term, I'd use it but it would probably sacrifice simplicity by adding letters. Bataireacht, Brollaidheacht, Baróg and Irish bare knuckle can be considered their own martial arts in my opinion though.Triaxialcommet86 (talk)02:30, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
