Qualifying info out of date / unclear?

[edit]

I believe the information inhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indianapolis_500#Qualifying_procedure could use some updating/clarification. But I can't find a clear/concise enough explanation of the rules to be confident in making the necessary changes myself.

One thing that seems missing is with regard to the "normal" vs "fast" lanes when making subsequent attempts (which I think is only used on Saturday, not Sunday?). From the source below, it looks like the statement "the previous time is still forfeited unless race officials waved off the attempt because of weather" is only applicable with regard to Sunday's last chance qualifying (positions 31 through 33), or on Saturday if you're in the "fast" lane. Re-qualifying attempts on Saturday from the "normal" lane apparently do not cause your previous time to be forfeited.

The statement regarding Sunday's last chance qualifying (31 through 33) "These drivers are then given only one attempt to re-qualify using the same four-lap format" also seems to be incorrect; it looks like they get unlimited attempts until time expires.

I'm also not sure if there's still a three-attempt limit for any Saturday or Sunday sessions.

From[2] (also corroborated with[3]):
On Saturday, all entered cars get a shot to qualify. Once done, teams may do a second run. The team has to decide whether to enter the normal lane (in which the previous time is retained) or the fast lane (which has priority over the normal lane but you have to withdraw your time).
For Sunday, you have the last row shootout, and the fast nine shootout. In the last row shootout, each entry not yet qualified gets one guaranteed attempt, and entries can make more than one attempt. If an additional attempt is made, the previous times are withdrawn and the most recent time set is eligible.
From the sources I found and the source you provided, only the fast nine shootout has an attempt limit. For that you get one shot. For the other sessions, there doesn't appear to be an attempt limit. (Dylan1496 (talk)21:28, 26 May 2021 (UTC))[reply]
