Reference

[edit]

Wilson, Wendell E. "Hans Sloane (1660-1753)." The Mineralogical Record 25.6 (1994): 65+.http://go.galegroup.com/ps/anonymous?id=GALE%7CA16547168

Society physician

[edit]

This section makes considerable effort to suggest that Sloane was a quack doctor. If he was would he have risen to such high offices in the scientific world? Perhaps, but in the section the references to knick knacks, toyman and virtuoso are repeated twice.Andrew ranfurly (talk)08:04, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As it happens I saw the same issues somewhat later on the same day (without having seen this), removed the duplication, and modified to some extent the implication that he was somewhat of a quack.Pol098 (talk)21:03, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Maltreatment of slaves

[edit]

The article cites Sloane's factual comments on the barbaric treatment of slaves who transgressed against the rules. It would be useful to indicate if he wrote approvingly, disapprovingly, or without expressing an opinion, particularly as he owned slaves. (I don't have access to the source.)Pol098 (talk)21:06, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Balance in lead section

[edit]

Guys, this article has 6 main sections (Early life - Voyage - Society physician - Brit. Mus. & Chelsea Physic Garden - Death - Legacy). The job of the lead section is to summarize the article impartially and with balance, representing all its sections. Currently the lead has 2 paragraphs, both of which speak of slavery.Chiswick Chap (talk)19:33, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Incoherent Ancestry

[edit]

This article goes from listing him as "Anglo-Irish", to "Ulster Scots", to:

"Like many other Scots 'Planters' in Ulster during the seventeenth-century, the Sloane family were almost certainly of Gaelic origin, Sloane probably being an anglicisation of Ó Sluagháin."

What does this even mean? The "Ulster Scots" page describes them as having roots mainly in the Scottish Lowlands, not Gaelic Ireland. Sloane appears to have been Gaelic-Irish on his paternal side, and English on his mother's side, like many other Irish Anglicans of his day. Please provide an appropriate cite for the "Ulster Scots" claim or I will remove it. Thanks.Jonathan f1 (talk)13:43, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
