Gritstone is a word which has different meanings for different groups of people. To a geologist it is simply descriptive of coarse grained sandstones whilst to a British rock climber, it can conjure up an entire landscape, a style of climbing and an associated culture. The latter might describe it simply as 'grit'. I've added a direct link to the page onRock climbing in the Peak District as that may be the best place to deal with those aspects of it. Some of the (British) geological aspects are addressed atMillstone Grit.
