I'm not qualified to add more info about how errenzhuan got started, but from my reading it seems like there should be more recognition here that the traditional forms were not sanitized: "Grotesque realism, dirty jokes, and coarse language are essential to errenzhuan," sayshttp://eprints.whiterose.ac.uk/138552/5/project_muse_719422.pdf, for example. Newsweek agrees: "...this form of comedy originated in northeast China, where ribald itinerant performers told dirty jokes, sang, and danced in farming communities to entertain peasants during the frigid and fallow winter months."https://www.newsweek.com/rise-comedians-china-embraces-raunch-74643Unclevinny (talk)04:29, 25 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
