All mayors are elected, one-way or another - most by councillors. Surely the title should beDirectly-elected mayors in the United Kingdom??AndrewRT00:40, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The Institute for Public Policy report suggested that Gtr Manchester and Gtr Birmingham should have strategic elected Mayors (on the GLA model) rather than Manc/Brum Cities should be forced to adopt one of the Mayor LA modelPhilcrbk23:12, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Better yet, "Directly elected mayors in England" - no hyphen, no need to bring in the other three countries of the UK (at least in the title - the section explaining that they have no directly elected mayors is informative and worth keeping).—Precedingunsigned comment added by207.47.242.160 (talk)21:49, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In the section 'Referendum in Existing Mayoral authority' the table is a little confusing - one might imagine a 'yes' vote either indicated that a mayor should be abolished, or that the status quo should be maintained. I've tried to think of a pithy, unambiguous way to describe the situation - maybe 'keep' and 'abolish'? --Neil (talk)13:59, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think I'm being unfair in observing that the current problems this page is experiencing are overwhelmingly as a result ofElectMayor (talk). Also looking athis/her contributions (s)he seems like an interested party who can't observe NPOV rules. There are obvious problems with the writing style, grammar and use of weblinks too but ElectMayor now seems to be quite persistent in reverting changes made to his/her edits (even when the original changes still contain parts of his/her contributions). Anyone else?Pjbeef (talk)23:56, 1 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This paragraph implies such campaigns are current, but the dates given for Doncaster and Lewisham are over four years ago, whilst the Torbay case seems more a case of councillors opposing the system than a grassroots driven move. Just how current are these campaigns? Anyone can set up a website or petition for abolition and have it ongoing but that's not really notable in and of itself.Timrollpickering (talk)11:44, 5 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
For anyone thinking about elected mayors, I want to say they reduced democracy. In the London Borough of Newham. Under an elected Mayor the council is run like a dictatorship. None of the Labour 60 Ward Coucillors ever challenge the Mayor. Even the local paper the Newham Recorder, does not publish anything that offends the mayor of Newham, such is the grip....
There have been many contraversial decisions that have been forced through in Newham.
My advice to any loacl authority, wanting to take the Elected Mayoral route, is don't do it! You will turn your Council into a dictatorship.— Precedingunsigned comment added by92.25.30.89 (talk)14:12, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
