differences between gatling guns

[edit]

I think the this section needs to be explained a bit more clearly. Such as that chain guns only have one barrel that all ammunition is feed through and a gatling gun has multiple barrels. --Simpsons fan6607:01, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As I understand it the AH-64s "Chain gun" Had three barrels, but was still referred to as a chain gun, how is it then that a chain gun only has one barrel?'''Aryeonos''' (talk)02:41, 10 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, that one barrel thing is wrong here. Autocannons like M61 or GAU-8/A Avenger are both, chain guns (use of external power) and gatling guns (multiple barrels and bolts rotating around a center axis).78.54.141.204 (talk)13:16, 12 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That's incorrect, in fact the article itself states specifically that a chain gun "uses an external source of power, rather than diverting energy from the cartridge, to cycle the weapon, and does so via a continuous loop of chain similar to that used on a motor or bicycle."
The article also correctly states "a chain gun uses an electric motor to drive the chain that moves in a rectangular circuit via four sprockets that apply tension to it. One link of the chain is connected to the bolt assembly, moving it back and forth to load, fire, extract, and eject cartridges." The chain in a gatling gun drives only ONE sporcket on the rear of the firing assembly that contains the barrels, bolt, ejectors, everything.
Therefore a gatling gun is not a chain gun and a chain gun is not a gatling gun.Garry Whale (talk)12:13, 9 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Technical errors

[edit]
A chain gun is NOT a "type of machine gun". As is mentioned (slightly in error) in the article a machine gun operates by using energy from the fired cartridge to operate the gun. A chain gun does not do this.
Then the article says machine guns are recoil operated. Most sub-machine guns are but most machine guns are gas operated.
The gun does not eject "cartridges" unless there was a fail-to-fire, it ejects casings. A cartridge is a COMPLETE unit; casing, primer, powder, bullet.

Completely useless drawing which shows exactly nothing of the specific chain gun mechanism
