Is it worth adding anywhere in here that the perspective of De Vigny is mentioned inThe Valley of Bones (byAnthony Powell) in a way that has led one of the foremost critics of Powell to say that the De Vigny perspective embodies Powell's viewpoint? Here is the passage:

"Pennistone [a character inValley] calls forth the shades of Alfred De Vigny, the French poet who served a fourteen-year military apprenticeship. In a way de Vigny is theraisonneur ofThe Valley of Bones. His view of the soldier as a 'dedicated person, a sort of monk of war' renouncing 'thought and action' for 'passive obedience' challenges both Gwatkin's 'keenness' and Sayce's 'recalcitrance'".
