Ryder Cup: Europe vs. European Union and Flags

There have been several edit, reverts and re-edits with regard to the designation of the European Team in the Ryder Cup, the use of Europe vs. European Union and the use of the European Union flag. I understand that Europe is not competing as the European Union. So we should refer to the team as "Europe." However, they did compete using the flag of the European Union" so it makes sense to follow the official designations and insignia used throughout the tournament, even if some editors feel it is an "awful propaganda flag." It is not the job of Wikipedia editors to pass judgment on what theofficial European Ryder cup team uses as its insignia.Crunch 11:34, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The flags on this page do not represent team or personal insignia, they identify the nationality of the player or team. By using the EU flag to represent nationality Wikipedia is taking a pro-EU political stance in breach ofWikipedia:Neutrality.Metthurst 10:21, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Update. Actually, a bit of research later and it seems that the flag in question is also theEuropean_flag with a much more benign meaning. It dates back to 1955 , although the Europen Union also adopted it for its use in 1992. It was originally used by theCouncil of Europe and the use of the flag is still controlled jointly by the Council of Europe and the European Union. It seems to be fit the non-political use by the Ryder Cup quite well. I dare say the Ryder Cup (andSolheim Cup and other non-political entities) know what they are doing and I would hope we could now close this dispute.Crunch 13:52, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
