• "This edition was contested between Everton and Coventry City atWembley" - how about Wembley Stadium for full clarity?
• "on Saturday 1 August 1987." - not sure the day is approrpiate in this context
• "Everton had won the 1986–87 Football League and Coventryhad won the 1987 FA Cup Final to qualify for the season opener for the first time." - repetition of "had won"
• "It was played two weeks before the new league seasonkicked off." - how about replacing the text in bold with a more formal phrase such asbegan orcommenced?
• Can the second paragraph be expanded more?

• Wikilink Wembley Stadium to the appropriate article only on the first mention not on any other subsequent mention
