Talia Rose Shire (néeCoppola; born April 25, 1946) is an American actress and member of theCoppola family. She is best known for her roles asConnie Corleone inThe Godfather trilogy andAdrian Pennino Balboa in theRocky series. For her work inThe Godfather Part II andRocky, Shire was nominated forAcademy Awards forBest Supporting Actress andBest Actress, respectively, and for theGolden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama for her role inRocky.

Early life and family

Shire was born Talia Rose Coppola in theWoodside section ofQueens, New York,[2] in 1946. Her paternal grandparents came to the United States fromBernalda,Basilicata.[3] Her maternal grandfather, popular Italian composer Francesco Pennino, emigrated fromNaples, Italy.[4]

Shire is the only daughter ofItalia (née Pennino) and arranger/composerCarmine Coppola. She is the sister of director/producerFrancis Ford Coppola and academicAugust Coppola, the aunt of actorNicolas Cage and directorSofia Coppola, and the niece of composer and conductorAnton Coppola.[5]

Her family moved toLake Success,Long Island,New York, where she lived during her high school years.[6]

She has three children. Her son Matthew Orlando Shire, an accomplished TV writer and film producer, is from her first marriage, to composerDavid Shire. Her other sons, actors/musiciansJason andRobert, are from her second marriage, to film producerJack Schwartzman.[7]

Career

Shire portrayedConnie Corleone inThe Godfather and its sequels and was nominated for theAcademy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance inThe Godfather Part II (1974).[6] For her portrayal of Adrianna Pennino, the love interest ofRocky Balboa inRocky (1976),[8] she won theNew York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Supporting Actress, theNational Board of Review Award for Best Supporting Actress, and was nominated for both theGolden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Drama and theAcademy Award for Best Actress. In addition to reprising her Adrianna Pennino role in fourRocky sequels,[9] Shire has appeared in such films asKiss the Bride (2002),I Heart Huckabees (2004), andHomo Erectus (2007).[10]
