Tales of the TARDIS is a companion series to the television seriesDoctor Who which features re-releases of stories from the show's original run, enclosed by additional material featuring actors reprising their roles. The series is produced byBad Wolf andBBC Studios, and executive produced byRussell T Davies,Jane Tranter,Julie Gardner,Phil Collinson, and Joel Collins.[1] The new material takes place withinDoctor Who's officialcanon, theWhoniverse.[2]

The episodes feature several actors reprising their roles includingPeter Davison,Colin Baker, andSylvester McCoy as theFifth,Sixth, andSeventh Doctors, respectively. The first six episodes were released alongside the show's60th anniversary specials in November 2023 to coincide with the launch of theWhoniverse. A further episode was released in June 2024.

Tales of the TARDIS was announced on 30 October 2023.[3][4][5] An additional episode was announced on 17 June 2024.[6][7]

The set was originally created for theseries 14 episode "Empire of Death".Russell T Davies originally intended on having the set destroyed after it transported the Doctor, Ruby, and Mel to 2046. This idea was scrapped due to the special effects already planned for other parts of the episode. Davies eventually got the idea to re-use the set forTales of the TARDIS as part ofDoctor Who's sixtieth-anniversary celebrations.[8]

In December 2024,Sylvester McCoy suggested the appearance of aged Doctors inTales of the TARDIS was intended to reintroduce their incarnations to modern viewers in preparation for potential future appearances.[9]

Filming

New material for the first six episodes was filmed over six days at Bad Wolf Studios from 25 to 30 September 2023.[10][11]

Release

The first six episodes were released on 1 November 2023 onBBC iPlayer, and feature several actors reprising their roles fromDoctor Who andThe Sarah Jane Adventures, includingPeter Davison,Colin Baker, andSylvester McCoy as theFifth,Sixth, andSeventh Doctors, respectively.[12][13][14] New material forTales of the TARDIS, filmed over six days at Bad Wolf Studios from 25 to 30 September 2023,[10][11] was written byDoctor Who writers Davies,Pete McTighe, andPhil Ford, directed by Joshua M.G. Thomas, and produced by Scott Handcock.[1][15]

A seventh episode was released on iPlayer and broadcast onBBC Four on 20 June 2024, two days before theseries 14 finale "Empire of Death", featuringNcuti Gatwa andMillie Gibson as theFifteenth Doctor andRuby Sunday. In conjunction with the return of antagonistSutekh in the parent series, the episode presents a remastered version ofPyramids of Mars with updated special effects,[16][17] as well as new material written by Davies, directed byJamie Donoughue, and produced by Vicki Delow.[18][19]
