Taldou (Arabic:تلدو,romanized: Talldū, also spelledTall Daww,Taldo,Tall Dhu orTaldao) is a town in theHoula region of northernSyria, north ofHoms in theHoms Governorate. Nearby towns includeBurj al-Qa'i to the east,Tallaf to the northeast,Kafr Laha andTell Dahab to the north,Qarmas andMaryamin to the northwest,al-Taybah al-Gharbiyah andal-Shinyah to the west,Kabu to the southwest,Sharqliyya to the south andGhur Gharbiyah to the southeast. In 2004 it had a population of 15,727 according to theSyria Central Bureau of Statistics.[1] Its inhabitants are predominantlySunni Muslims.[2]
On May 25, 2012, together with the neighboring village al-Shumariyeh, Taldou was the scene of theHoula massacre in which 108 civilians, including 49 children and 32 women, were killed, allegedly bySyrian Army shelling and ground attacks by pro-governmentShabeeha militiamen.[3] As of 21 June 2012, government forces have been driven from the town center and are relegated to positions on the town's periphery. On May 15, 2018, Syrian forces retook the town.[4][5]
