Takab (Persian:تكاب)[5][a] is a city in theCentral District ofTakab County,West Azerbaijan province,Iran, serving as capital of both the county and the district.[10]
The famous historical complexTakht-e Soleyman is situated to the North-East of the city. Takht-e-Soleyman was one of Takab's oldestZoroastrianfire temples during theSassanid Dynasty and had the nameAzargoshnasp.[11] TheKaraftu Cave is also situated in Takab nearSaqqez.
Shiz is the ancient name used duringPersian Empire for Takab. Takab means one narrow water way inPersian language. Tak means one or alone and Ab means water. Takab was originally known as Tikan Təpə by its native TurkicAfshar people until 1941 when Iran'sAcademy of Persian Language and Literature officially changed it to Takab.[citation needed] Afshar people are one of theOghuz Turkic peoples.[12] These originally nomadic Oghuz tribes moved from Central Asia and initially settled inIranian Azerbaijan,Azerbaijan republic, andEastern Turkey. Later some of them were relocated by theSafavids toKhorasan andMazandaran.[13]
The predominant language spoken in the city isAzerbaijani, while the predominant religion isShia Islam. MinorityKurdish tribes includeShekak, Sharani, Moslanlu and Zafranlu, while most of the Azerbaijani population is of the Afshar tribe.[14] The Azerbaijanis have also been described as 'Turkmans'.[15]Nowadays out of twenty-three neighborhoods in Takab city, ten neighborhoods are completely inhabited byAzerbaijanis and four neighborhoods are mostly inhabited byAzerbaijanis, and six neighborhoods are completely inhabited byKurds and three neighborhoods are mostly inhabited byKurds.[16]
At the time of the 2006 National Census, the city's population was 43,702 in 10,078 households.[17] The following census in 2011 counted 44,040 people in 11,749 households.[18] The 2016 census measured the population of the city as of 49,677 people in 14,369 households.[4]

The majority of residents of Takab earn their income from agriculture. Takab is home to the biggest gold mine in the entire country and one of the biggest in the Middle East.[20]
An earlier report by Fars on Wednesday quoted Iraj Saghafi, acting governor of Takab in northwestern Iran, saying an explosion heard in the region was "possibly related to work in a nearby rock quarry."
