Taenioptynx is agenus oftypical owls, or true owls, in the familyStrigidae, that inhabitsAsia.
Thecollared owlet and theSunda owlet were formerly included in the genusGlaucidium. They were moved to the resurrected genusTaenioptynx based on amolecular phylogenetic study published in 2019.[1][2] The genusTaenioptynx had been introduced by the German naturalistJohann Jakob Kaup in 1848 with the collared owlet as thetype species.[3] The genus name combines theAncient Greektainia meaning "band" or "stripe" withptunx meaning "owl".[4]
