T. V. Somanathan (born 10 May 1965) is an Indianbureaucrat andIAS officer who is serving as theCabinet Secretary of India since 30 August 2024.[2] Before this, he served as theFinance Secretary of India (Department of Expenditure).[3][4][5] Prior to this appointment, he served asAdditional Secretary andJoint Secretary in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). He also worked as Director at theWorld Bank Group, Washington D.C., where he initially joined under its Young Professionals Program.[6] He is a 1987 batchIndian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of theTamil Nadu cadre.[6]

Education

Somanathan holds a Ph.D. in economics fromCalcutta University,[6][7][8] an Executive Development Program diploma fromHarvard Business School,[6] Master of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce degrees fromPanjab University. He is also a Fellow of theInstitute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (FCA), theChartered Institute of Management Accountants, London,the Institute of Chartered Secretaries, London, theAssociation of Chartered Certified Accountants, London, theInstitute of Company Secretaries of India and theInstitute of Cost Accountants of India.[6] Somanathan has published numerous articles and papers on economics, finance, governance and public policy in academic journals and in the Hindu, Business Standard, Business Line, Indian Express, Fortune India, Yojana, Kurukshetra etc.[7] He also was aYoung Professional for the World Bank Group (1996).

Career

Somanathan appeared for the 1987Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination and secured an All India Rank of 2nd behindAmir Subhani, who was the topper of the 1987UPSC Civil Services Examination. Somanathan joinedIndian Administrative Service getting posted in the Tamil Nadu Cadre.[9]

Somanathan has served in various positions for both theGovernment of India and theGovernment of Tamil Nadu,[6] including as Secretary to theChief Minister,Managing Director of theChennai Metro Rail Corporation,Principal Secretary in Special Initiatives department and Planning & Development department,Joint Secretary in theMinistry of Corporate Affairs,Additional Secretary in thePrime Minister’s Office (PMO), Commissioner for Commercial Taxes, Tamil Nadu and served as theFinance Secretary of India.[6][10]

T.V Somanathan took charge asCabinet Secretary fromRajiv Gauba on 30 August 2024 after serving as Officer on Special Duty in the Cabinet Secretariat.[2]
