T. V. Devarajan, is an Indian medical doctor and general physician. TheGovernment of India honoured him, in 2013, by awarding him thePadma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award, for his contributions to the field of medicine.[1]
Devarajan was born inThrissur, in the south Indian state ofKerala. He graduated in medicine and went on to take the degrees of MD and DSc in general medicine.[2] He was also awarded theFellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Glasgow in 2007.[3][4]
He started his career by joining the faculty of theMadras Medical College, where he taught without drawing a salary[3] for 29 years.[5] Later, he moved to theAarupadai Veedu Medical College, Kirumambakkam, as a professor, where he still teaches general medicine.[citation needed] He has also been a senior consultant physician at theApollo Hospitals, Chennai, since 1986.[4]
He is the author of four books,Aids to Clinical Medicine,[6]Medicine in a Nutshell[7]Clinical Medicine Made Easy[8] andMedical Advice for Healthy Life.[9]
Devarajan is also credited with 28 articles[4] such asA Challenging Case of Intra-abdominal Sepsis with Multiorgan Failure: An Emerging Role of Intravenous Immunoglobulin in Sepsis,[10] published in various journals. He also assists students in their research activities.[11] He was awarded gold medal for surgery, gynaecology and prize in medicine and ophthalmology as a medical student. He delivered student memorial oration in Madras Medical College and he served as an inspector for national board of examination.
Devarajan, an examiner for a few universities,[4] lives inChetpet,Chennai, inTamil Nadu.[12] His daughter, Sangeetha Devarajan, has followed her father's footsteps and is a UK-based gynaecologist and a member of theRoyal College of Gynaecologists.[3]
Devarajan is also a member of professional bodies such as theCardiological Society of India[13] and the Chennai chapter of theAssociation of Physicians of India.[14] He is also the editor in chief in preparation of a textbook of medicine. He is a jury member for selection of Oscar awards in medicine by BMJ. He is an examiner for MBBS, MD and PhD for many universities.
Devarajan was honoured withDr. B. C. Roy Award, recognizing him as aneminent teacher, in 2003.[3][4][5][13] In 2013, theGovernment of India awarded him the fourth highest civilian award, thePadma Shri.[1][5]
