Atéléroman ("telenovel" or ''annual drama series'') is a genre ofFrench-languagedramatelevision series inCanada, similar to asoap opera or aSpanish languagetelenovela. InFrance, thetéléroman genre is known asfeuilleton télévisé (similar to aserial).Téléromans are one of the most popular television series formats in Québécoisculture[1] and are also shown on French television.
In Canada, all of the majorfrancophone television networks airtéléromans, including the public broadcasterRadio-Canada, which broadcasts them nationally, and the private networksTVA andNoovo.TFO inOntario has also produced one téléroman.
In France, theTF1 network and the subscription channelCanal+ airfeuilletons télévisés. Some famous téléromans produced in France includeRiviera,Sous le soleil,Plus belle la vie andCinq sœurs.
One of the first téléromans on Canadian television wasLa famille Plouffe. Thistéléroman proved highly successful, and has helped the genre become a staple onCanadian French television. English Canadian networks have also adapted a number of Québec téléromans for English viewers, includingLa famille Plouffe,Lance et Compte andLes Hauts et les bas de Sophie Paquin, with varying degrees of success.
