Charles Ives'sSymphony No. 1 in D minor, written between 1898 and 1902, is an example of how Ives synthesized ideas fromcomposers who came before him.[citation needed] Many of his latersymphonies relied onProtestanthymns as the maintheme. However, this symphony is composed in the late-Romantic European tradition, and is believed[by whom?] to contain manyparaphrases from famous European pieces such asTchaikovsky'sPathétique and Schubert'sUnfinished symphonies and especiallyDvořák'sNew World Symphony.

The piece is scored for 2flutes, 2oboes,cor anglais, 2clarinets, 2bassoons, 4horns, 2trumpets, 3trombones,tuba,timpani andstrings. There is also an optional part for a third flute. The new critical edition adds side drum percussion in the coda of the finale.(Recent recordings by Andrew Litton and Gustavo Dudamel include these percussion parts).

There are fourmovements:

  1. Allegro
  2. Adagiomolto (Sostenuto)
  3. Scherzo:Vivace
  4. Allegro molto

A typical performance lasts 35–37 minutes.

In popular culture

[edit]

This symphony is regularly alluded to inMichael Moorcock's 1971 novelA Cure for Cancer.

Discography

[edit]

In general, since the work lasts about 40 minutes, leaving 40 minutes on a CD, it is usually paired with either No. 2 or No. 4. For example, theHyperion Records CD by theDallas Symphony Orchestra conducted byAndrew Litton also includesSymphony No. 4 andCentral Park in the Dark. TheNaxos Records CD of theRTÉ National Symphony Orchestra conducted byJames Sinclair includes instead the "Emerson" Concerto.
