Syed Najibul Bashar Maizbhandari (Bengali:সৈয়দ নজিবুল বশর মাইজভাণ্ডারী) is the chairman ofBangladesh Tarikat Federation and former Member of Parliament of theChittagong-2 constituency.[1]
Syed Najibul Bashar Maizbhandari was born on 2 December 1959, to aBengali MuslimSyed family ofsaintly heritage belonging to theMaizbhandariaTariqah inFatikchhari,Chittagong District,East Pakistan (nowBangladesh). He is a son of theSufi Peer Syed Shafiul Bashar Maizbhandari who himself is the son ofSyed Ghulamur Rahman Maizbhandari. His mother is Syeda Ashrafunnesa Begum.[2] His ancestors migrated fromMedina toGaur, the former capital of medieval Bengal, viaBaghdad andDelhi. Maizbhandari's recent lineage is as follows: Syed Najibul Bashar, son of Syed Shafiul Bashar, son of Syed Ghulamur Rahman, son of Syed Abdul Karim Shah, son of Syed Tayyabullah, son of Syed Abdul Qadir, son of Syed Hamiduddin. Hamiduddin was the appointedImam andQadi ofGaur, who moved toPatiya inChittagong District due to an epidemic. Syed Abdul Qadir was appointed theImam of Azimnagar in Fatikchhari.[3]
Maizbhandari completed his education up until he gained hisHigher Secondary School Certificate.[4]
During the1991 Bangladeshi general elections, Maizbhandari successfully won a seat in theChittagong-4 constituency as anAwami League candidate. However, he later became affiliated with theBangladesh Nationalist Party. He represented them as a candidate for the same constituency in the2001 Bangladeshi general election, but did not win a seat.[citation needed]
In 1997,BNP ChairpersonBegum Khaleda Zia declared him the convener of the party's ulama organization, theJatiotabadi Ulama Dal[5]
He left the Bangladesh Nationalist Party in 2005 because the party had formed an alliance with theJamaat-e-Islami, which Maizbhandari accuses of supporting terrorists who attackdargahs (Sufi shrines); Maizbhandari is the president of the Bangladesh Dargah Mazar Federation, an association of shrines.[6] In the same year, he founded theBangladesh Tarikat Federation political party which had experienced its first elections in 2008 with 45 candidates but no seats won in parliament.[citation needed]
On 5 January 2014, Maizbhandari won a seat in theChittagong-2 representing his party and managed to keep this seat again in the2018 Bangladeshi general election.[7] He is the Chairman of Bangladesh Tarikat Federation, ailed of theAwami League.[8]
