Tadeusz Świętochowski (Polish:[taˈdɛ.uʂɕfjɛntɔˈxɔfskʲi]; 28 April 1932[1] – 15 February 2017) was a Polish-American historian andCaucasologist,Professor Emeritus ofColumbia University andMonmouth University.[2][3]
Świętochowski was born inFrance into a family of Polish diplomat Stanisław Świętochowski, who died in theUSSR, probably inButyrka prison.[4] After graduating with a degree in Turkish studies from theUniversity of Warsaw, he left Poland for the Middle East, where he earned his MA in Arab Studies at theAmerican University of Beirut, and later studied Arab History at theCairo University. In 1965, he moved with his wife Marie Lukens, whom he met inIstanbul, toNew York, where he received a PhD degree from theNew York University.[5][6]
Tadeusz Swietochowski was a Professor of Soviet and Middle East Studies at Monmouth University, New Jersey.[7] He was a fellow at theKennan Institute,Washington, D.C.,[8] and a Senior Fellow at theHarriman Institute, Columbia University.[9]
Swietochowski was a specialist on the modernhistory of Azerbaijan.[10] He was an Honorary Doctor ofKhazar University andBaku State University and Honorary Member ofCentral Eurasian Studies Society.[11] His fields of study included the modern history of theMiddle East andAzerbaijan.
He also lectured at theWarsaw University asFulbright Senior Specialist.
