Suzhou District is adistrict of the city ofJiuquan,GansuProvince in thePeople's Republic of China. It was an important city in its own right. Today, it is the seat of Jiuquan's administration.

Name

Suzhou is named for the formerSu Prefecture ofimperial China.

History

Su Prefecture was established under theSui and renamedJiuquan Commandery under theTang.[2] Its seat was established just within the extreme northwest angle of theGreat Wall near theJade Gate. It sometimes served as the capital of the province of Gansu.[3] Along with its role protecting trade along theSilk Road, Suzhou was the great center of therhubarb trade. The old town was completely destroyed in theFirst Dungan Revolt but was recovered by theQing in 1873 and was swiftly rebuilt.[3]
