Susan Farrell Egan (born February 18, 1970) is an American actress, singer, and dancer known for her work on theBroadway stage. She is best known for originating the role ofBelle in the Broadway musical adaptation ofBeauty and the Beast (1994), for providing the voices ofMegara (Meg) inHercules (1997) andRose Quartz inSteven Universe, and for voicing the English dubs of Madame Gina inPorco Rosso and Lin inSpirited Away.

Early life

Susan Egan was born inSeal Beach, California on February 18, 1970.[1] She attendedLos Alamitos High School and the co-locatedOrange County High School of the Arts[2] andUCLA.[3]

Egan spent much of her time as a child taking dance, concentrating onballet and trained as afigure skater from ages five to 10.[4] While attending Los Alamitos High School, theOrange County School of the Arts inSanta Ana, California, andUniversity of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), she began her career acting in local community theaters and civic light operas. While attending UCLA, Egan took time off whenTommy Tune cast her as Kim MacAfee in his touring production ofBye Bye Birdie.[5] After the tour ended, she was cast in the tour ofState Fair and soon afterwards won the coveted role ofBelle in the originalBroadway cast ofBeauty and the Beast in 1994, for which she was nominated for theTony Award for Best Actress in a Musical at the48th Tony Awards and theDrama Desk Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical.[6]

On Broadway, Egan portrayed Belle for one year and reprised the role in theLos Angeles production in 1995, along with many of the original Broadway cast members. She also starred portraying characters in leading roles inState Fair,Cabaret,Triumph of Love, andThoroughly Modern Millie.[7] She has performed in one-woman,cabaret-style concerts at venues across the U.S. including theOrange County Performing Arts Center inCosta Mesa, California[4] and at theCarpenter Performing Arts Center inLong Beach, California.[5] Egan has been the headline act performing with more than 60symphonies[8] and has appeared at theHollywood Bowl five times including on June 6, 2016, when she appeared alongsideBrad Kane as an opening act forDisney'sThe Little Mermaid Live show.[9]

Egan produces live stage productions with two companies she manages: Broadway Princess Party, LLC and 10th & Main Productions. She producesDisney Princess - The Concert,[10]Walt Disney Animation Studios: The Concert[10] and other shows often in partnership with Disney Concerts.[11]

Television

On television, Egan is known for her co-starring role as Nikki White (Nikki Cox)'s best friend Mary Campbell inNikki on theThe WB.[12]

Voice acting

Egan's voice has been featured in theEnglish language version of two feature films byHayao Miyazaki,Spirited Away andPorco Rosso. She is most widely known for voicingMegara (Meg) in the 1997 filmHercules[13] and reprised her role in the 1998TV series of the same name in two episodes and also inKingdom Hearts II andKingdom Hearts III.[14]

Egan provided Angel (Alyssa Milano)'s singing voice inLady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure[15] and the voice acting for Rose Quartz on theCartoon Network animated seriesSteven Universe along with various other characters.
