Surak is 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) east ofSari, on the road connecting Sari in the west toNeka in the east. Surak is south of theCaspian Sea and north of the northern slopes of theAlborz Mountains. The village of Surak was converted to a city in 1996.[3]
At the time of the 2006 National Census, the city's population was 8,817 in 2,377 households,[9] when it was capital of the formerMiandorud District inSari County.[10] The following census in 2011 counted 8,930 people in 2,712 households,[11] by which time the district had been separated from the county in the establishment ofMiandorud County. Surak was transferred to the newCentral District as the county's capital.[7] The 2016 census measured the population of the city as 9,208 people in 4,087 households.[4]
