John Michael CroninMNZM is a New Zealand politician. As of 2008[update] he is the chairperson of theBay of Plenty regional council,[1] one of four councillors elected by the city ofTauranga. Previously, he has sought election toParliament — in the1993 election, he was theNational Party's candidate to win theTauranga electorate back from former National MPWinston Peters,[2] and in the1996 election, he led the smallSuperannuitants and Youth Action party and stood in theWaitakere electorate.[3] He was not successful in either attempt.
Cronin is one of the proponents of the proposed move of the regional council offices fromWhakatāne, to a green field site in Tauranga, a move expected to cost ratepayers over NZ$23 million.[1]
He was awarded MNZM in the2009 New Year Honours, for services to local body affairs and the community.[4]
