TheSundaic island thrush (Turdus javanicus), also known as the Sunda island thrush,[1] is a species ofpasserine in the familyTurdidae. It is found inIndonesia andMalaysia. Prior to 2024, the Sundaic island thrush was considered to be eight separate subspecies of the island thrush. It has the largest distribution in the island thrushcomplex, ranging from northernSumatra south toJava, with a disjunct population in northernBorneo.
The Sundaic island thrush'snominate subspecies,T. j. javanicus was first described in 1821 by American naturalistThomas Horsfield asTurdus javanicus.[1] It was later considered to be a subspecies of Island thrush. In 2024, following aphylogenic study of Island thrush subspecies in 2023, the Island thrush was split into 17 different species by theIOC andClements checklist.[2][3][4] It currently has 8 recognized subspecies:[1]
