Sumner Strait is astrait in theAlexander Archipelago in thesoutheastern region of theU.S. state ofAlaska. It is about 80 miles (130 km) long and 10 miles (16 km) wide, extending from the mouth of theStikine River to Iphigenia Bay on theGulf of Alaska, separatingMitkof Island,Kupreanof Island, andKuiu Island on the north fromZarembo Island andPrince of Wales Island on the south.[1]
The fur trader William Brown was the firstEuropean to visit the strait about 1793. Later the same yearJames Johnstone, one ofGeorge Vancouver's officers during his1791-95 expedition, charted it.[2] It was named in 1875 byW. H. Dall in honor ofCharles Sumner.[1]
TheCape Decision Light is a notable aid-to-navigation on Sumner Strait.
