TheSumba–Flores languages, which correspond to the traditional "Bima–Sumba" subgroup minusBima, are a proposed group ofAustronesian languages (geographicallyCentral–Eastern Malayo-Polynesian languages) spoken on and around the islands ofSumba and western–centralFlores in theLesser Sundas,Indonesia. The main languages areManggarai, which has half a million speakers on the western third ofFlores, andKambera, with a quarter million speakers on the eastern half ofSumba Island.
TheHawu language ofSavu Island is suspected of having a non-Austronesiansubstratum, but perhaps not to any greater extent than the languages of central and eastern Flores, such asSika, or indeed ofCentral Malayo-Polynesian languages in general.
Blust (2008)[1] finds moderate support for linking the languages of western and central Flores with Sumba–Hawu.
