Sulaymān I, (full name Sulaymān Ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Kāmil,Arabic:سليمان بن عبد الله الكامل), sometimes calledSidi Sliman orMoulay Slimane, was the brother ofIdris I of Morocco, son of the great-grandson of the caliphAli andFatima, daughter of the Islamic prophetMuhammad. He was probably born around 730 and died in 814,[1] perhaps inAin El Hout in theprovince of Tlemcen inAlgeria.[2]
According toIbn Khaldoun, he reachedTlemcen after the assassination of his brotherIdris I in 791 and took control of it.[3] But according toIbn Idhari andAl-Bakri, he would have settled inTlemcen while his brother was alive and probably with his approval.[4] This is the version retained by historians Philippe Sénac and Patrice Cressier who indicate that Sulaymān I wasgovernor of Tlemcen between 786 and 813.[5] However, according to other ancient Arab authors, he would not have escaped the massacre of Fakh and would have died in June 786.[6]
He gives his name to theSulaymanid dynasty inAlgeria, being the father of Muḥammad who already governed the region in 806.[6]
