Chinese-American political scientist
Suisheng Zhao (Chinese:赵穗生; born September 17, 1954[1]) is a Chinese-Americanpolitical scientist currently serving as professor ofChinese politics andforeign policy at theUniversity of Denver'sJosef Korbel School of International Studies. He directs the school's Center for China–US Cooperation,[2][3] and is the founding editor and editor-in-chief of theJournal of Contemporary China.[2][4][5]
Zhao received a BA and MA in economics fromPeking University, and subsequently completed a second MA in sociology from theUniversity of Missouri. Zhao earned hisPhD in political science from theUniversity of California, San Diego.[3]
Prior to joining the University of Denver, Zhao was an associate professor of political science atWashington College and an associate professor of East Asian politics atColby College.[6]
Zhao writes that the rise of "state-led pragmatic nationalism" in 1990s China was an instrumental response to the dissolution of the Soviet Union.[7]: 219–220
Zhao contends that since 2008, China has become increasingly assertive in foreign affairs, particularly in its relations with the United States, Europe, and Asia-Pacific countries.[8]: 15 Zhao attributes this increased assertiveness in part to China's efforts to restore itself from a self-perceived position of victimhood in international affairs.[8]: 15 Zhao writes that China's dissatisfaction with the US-led global order arises from China's position within that order, rather than with the structure of the order itself.[9]: 31
