Asuffragan diocese is one of thedioceses other than themetropolitan archdiocese that constitute anecclesiastical province. It exists in someChristian denominations, in particular theCatholic Church[1], theEpiscopal Church[2],Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, and theRomanian Orthodox Church[3].
In the Catholic Church, although such a diocese is governed by its ownbishop orordinary, who is thesuffragan bishop, themetropolitan archbishop has in its regard certain rights and duties of oversight.[specify] He has no power of governance within a suffragan diocese, but has some limited rights and duties[specify] to intervene in cases of neglect by the authorities of the diocese itself.[4]
