Suf Podgoreanu (Hebrew:סוף פודגוראנו; born 20 January 2002) is an Israeli professionalfootballer who plays as awinger or as aforward for DutchEredivisie clubHeracles Almelo, on loan fromMaccabi Haifa, and theIsrael national team.[3][2][4][5]
Podgoreanu was born and raised inHadera, Israel, to an Israeli family ofAshkenazi Jewish descent, and is ofRomanian-Jewish descent on his father's side.[6][7] Both his father Danny Podgoreanu and his grandfather played for the localHapoel clubs as well.[7][8]
He also holds a Romanian passport, on account of his Ashkenazi Jewish ancestors, which eases the move to certain European football leagues.[6][9][7][8]
Podgoreanu came through the youth ranks ofMaccabi Haifa, where he was a prolific goalscorer for the under-19s, before joining the first team during the2019–20 season.[10][11][12]Podgoreanu made his debut for Maccabi Haifa on 3 June 2020 in a game againstMaccabi Tel Aviv in a league match of the 2019–20 season.[13]
Podgoreanu moved to Italian sideRoma at the beginning of the2019–20 season, initially joining theiryouth team.[10] After a season underAlberto De Rossi's management with 27 games, 3 goals and 6 assists, where he even joined the bench of the first team for a few games,[14] he was transferred to their Serie A rivalsSpezia.[15][16] Podgoreanu made his debut for Spezia on 19 September 2021, replacingJanis Antiste in a 2–1Serie A away win.[17][18][19]
On 2 September 2022, Podgoreanu returned toMaccabi Haifa on loan with an option to buy.[20]On 16 May 2023, he won his first adult title, as winning theIsraeli Premier League championship.[citation needed]
On 22 August 2024, Podgoreanu was loaned byHeracles Almelo in the Netherlands.[21]
Podgoreanu has been a youth international for Israel since 2017.[22][10][11][12]
He also plays for theIsrael U-21 since 2021.[23]
He was called up for the seniorIsrael national team in October 2021, during their2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers - UEFA.[24] Podgoreanu debuted for a full match with the senior team in a 3–2 home win for Israel againstFaroe Islands on 15 November 2021, at the2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers - UEFA,[25] where he had an assist as well.[26]
