Susan Elizabeth Birtwistle, Lady Eyre, (born 9 December 1945)[1] is aproducer and writer oftelevision drama. Birtwistle has won awards for several of her productions, includingHotel du Lac,Pride and Prejudice andEmma, and was one of the nominees for the 2008BAFTA Awards for her production ofCranford.[2]
Birtwistle was born inNorthwich,Cheshire,England, and attended Northwich County Grammar School for Girls (nowThe County High School, Leftwich). She studied drama and English atCoventry College of Education (became part of theUniversity of Warwick).
Her father worked for British Rail, lastly as an instructor inCrewe.[3] Her mother died in March 1998.[4]
Birtwistle is known for producingcostume dramas.
Birtwistle married the English film, theatre, television and opera directorRichard Eyre in July 1973 atChelsea Register Office[5] in London; they have one daughter.[6]
In 2008, she was awarded an honorarydoctorate at theUniversity of Chester.[7]
